Ranji Trophy: A matinee in Mumbai is scheduled

Share

Out of style When India’s batter Shreyas Iyer returns to domestic play tomorrow when the record 41-time champion Mumbai takes on Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinals here, he will be driven to make a point and provide a timely reminder of his skill set.

Iyer, who was cut from the Indian Test team and removed from the BCCI’s contractual player list after he withdrew from the quarterfinal citing back and groin issues, has fully healed to go to Mumbai for the pivotal match.

Iyer would be crucial to Mumbai’s plan, particularly while facing Tamil Nadu’s strong spin bowling, which has been one of their main tools this year.

Iyer and company will have a fantastic chance to make an impression against the top two wicket-takers, left-arm spinner S Ajith Ram (41), and skipper R Sai Kishore (47 wickets).

Mumbai’s all-around strength against Tamil Nadu’s disciplined and relentless spinners and their big-scoring batsmen in the semifinals promises to be an exciting match.

Mumbai has advanced to the semifinals thanks to timely contributions from a number of players, with the exception of captain Ajinkya Rahane, who has only produced one fifty from six games.

Mumbai’s bowlers share the strain rather effectively, as they find themselves in the final four despite none of them being in the top 10 in the list of wicket-takers (Mohit Avasthi, 32, is ranked 13th).

Tamil Nadu and Mumbai are both coming off strong quarterfinal victories. Mumbai had a little lead because of young Musheer Khan’s undefeated 203, but it quickly grew to an overwhelming 605, thanks to a historic performance by Mumbai’s tailenders Tanush Kotian and Tushar Deshpande against Baroda.

Tamil Nadu defeated Saurashtra, the reigning champions. The fact that they have bowled out every opponent twice in every Ranji encounter this year, regardless of the result, is a notable aspect of their outstanding run.

MP wants to be the center of attention.

Nagpur: When the two longtime rivals square off in their Ranji Trophy semifinal commencing tomorrow, a determined Madhya Pradesh will have the difficult challenge of taming Vidarbha at their home pitch, which the hosts have converted into an impenetrable fortress this season. This season, Vidarbha, the reigning champions, has played four games at the VCA Stadium. They have won three of them, with Saurashtra being their only loss. These wins have also come by strong margins: in the quarterfinals, Karnataka defeated Services by 127 runs, Haryana by 115 runs, and Services by seven wickets. The 2022 winners, Madhya Pradesh, have made it to the last four after navigating flame-filled circles. In eight league games, they only secured three complete victories, but in other games, they fought hard to take leads in the first innings.
